The month of May is somehow underway already -- but April was so overflowing with goodness here at the SND news + events desk that we just couldn't let it get away without a missive. Thank you as ever, for your time and interest!

It was a deeply exciting month for me at everyone's favorite Emmy-winning art journalism platform, ARTBOUND, with a pair of stories I'm especially proud of.

--A DCA departmental interview and overview reportage on the newly announced citywide social-practice biennial CURRENT:LA Water, which gets underway this July.

--A profile accompanying a rare and incredibly poetic, moving interview with the iconic artist John Outterbridge. Even cooler, the story made a news item in the LA Times Culture Roundup

It was also an eclectic and fast-paced time at my HUFFINGTON POST Blog, with an array of essays on a range of talented Los Angeles artists having big moments of their own.

--Conceptual photographer Jane Szabo's Reconstructing Self will open with a new installation drawn from two related series of allegorical self-portraiture at MOAH Lancaster on May 7th.

--Christopher Kent Schumaker's My Strangers is a stunning, strange new photography book, edited by Peter Frank and with essays by Peter and myself. Both Szabo and Schumaker were exhibitors at the Photo Independent Art Fair this past weekend, and made for engaging, fascinating stops on the extended curatorial tour I gave at the fair. We had like 20 people at 10:30 on a Sunday morning! In LA! So great.

--Sculptor Sedi Pak offers fresh, conceptually and craftily irresistible contemporary wood sculpture. Her Silverlake studio is open with an installation of her latest work, through May 7. Click through for address/rsvp info.

--Painter Ugo Nonis' vibrant post-Pop, hyperpatterned color riots were the hit of last weekend's Art City Austin Art Fair.

--Photographer Laura London's Relocation is on view at Chimento Contemporary through May 28, and they've published a limited edition catalog with excerpts from my essay.

--Photographer Janine Brown's Wallflowers installation of ethereal portraits is on view at Gallery 825 through May 6.

Brown was also featured in the recent ART SHARE-LA exhibition, Face in the Crowd. Actually it's been an amazing month at Art Share, too. I'm so honored to be a part of their selection committee dedicated to the motto #keeptheartsdistrictartsy. Their current gallery show, Things Fall Apart, is simply gorgeous, on view through May 7. Coming up on May 28, watch for Close to Home, on track to be another stunner. I know I'm biased, but don't take my word for it. TimeOut LA has just named Art Share one of the city's best galleries for new art.

Because I can't get enough of that funky non-profit stuff, and to balance the local with some international flavor, I joined the ADC Building Bridges Advisory Board. It's a huge honor, and I can't wait to start sharing more exciting upcoming news. Watch this space.

I was (finally!) a guest on Mat Gleason's internet art-world talk show MODERN ART BLITZ. We get into art critic stuff and I dodge the tough questions while Abel makes a portrait of me. It's on YOUTUBE.

And I took the act on the road with a raucous panel discussion organized by the PALM SPRINGS ART MUSEUM earlier in April. Steven Biller, David Pagel, moderator Donald Osborne and I tried to keep it 100. There was also an enlightening and educative panel discussion at the VINCENT PRICE ART MUSEUM for Linda Arreola's exhibition, with the artist, curator Bill Moreno, scholar and editor Sybil Venegas, and myself. This stellar show is up through May 21.

A documentary film about twin brothers and iconic artists Jerome and Joel-Peter Witkin, for which I was honored to be interviewed, was featured at the Newport Beach Film Festival.

The eminent Scripps Annual Ceramic Exhibition (for which I wrote the catalog essay) was reviewed in Art Ltd's March issue.

The event of the Spring season was the long-awaited opening of the immense Hauser Wirth Schimmel megatron gallery in the Downtown Arts District. I penned a special Op-Ed for Artbound looking at what we can expect from our fancy new neighbors.

The March/April issue of Art Ltd. features my cover story on painter Rebecca Campbell; as well as a review of Steven Hull's recent exhibition at Rosamund Felsen Gallery; and a review of Catherine Opie's new book about all the crazy stuff in Elizabeth Taylor's house.

Korean sculptor
Yi Kwan Hwon has his first public art installation and a major gallery show, both at the Pacific Design Center opening March 24. My catalog essay for SIGHT LINES appears on the Huffington Post.

Vice named me a Top 5 Art Mind to Watch in 2016. Me and Jerry. That was pretty great.

UK artist Eleanor Macnair's renderings of classic photographs in Play-doh, currently on view at Kopeikin Gallery, was perfect for The Creators Project.

Also for The Creators Project, a look at the (mostly best, tiny bit of worst) results of celebrity/artist collaborations.

The Creators Project also let me write about the new documentary on rock star photographer (and my one-time college professor, Gregory Crewdson. They published it in their French edition, too. Tres fancy!

KuBO & Tom Herberg: Dreams of Chaos opened at Mt. San Antonio College, curated by the indomitable Fatemeh Burnes. The catalog essay I wrote for the exhibition is published on Huffington Post.

Rory Devine will soon publish a book for his recent show at c. nichols project, but here's a preview of my catalog essay on Huffington Post.

South Bay Contemporary's current exhibition, Dreaming the Real, features work by Eve Wood, Siobhan McClure, and Nathan Huff. The essay for that show is on Huffington Post, too.

My essay for the recent blockbuster Riccardo Mannelli show at Building Bridges was also published in full at the Huffington Post.
EMS made a short film on the painter Susan Lizotte, in which I talk too much but we have a good time with the New Medievalism. It's posted on Youtube.

I was heavily interviewed by a very talented journalism major, for a Campus Times profile on friend of this page, the intrepid ocean-going painter Danielle Eubank.

The rocker and gifted visual artist Brandon Boyd has a new bio, which looks pretty sweet.

The press release for Roy Thurston's current exhibition at Chimento Contemporary is pretty sweet, too.

That's right, I showed art that I made, in a terrific group show at Gabba Gallery specifically offering a look at the personal art practice of folks like me who are known for other things ...And I even got my first good review! Thank you, DiversionsLA! Curate This! Part Deux is open at Gabba Gallery through February 28.

Last month, I also published my story on the 2016 Pirelli Calendar, shot by Annie Leibovitz, along with some concurrent thoughts on her new WOMEN portraits, unveiled in January -- for Whitehot Magazine.

Also for Whitehot Magazine, a review of painter Wyatt Mills' solo exhibition at Project Gallery in Chinatown, which is open through March 6 and truly must-see.

It was an honor to appear in the documentary, Notes for the Reconstruction of Beauty, on titan of modern Italian painting, Riccardo Mannelli, as well as to write an essay for the catalog to his current exhibition of the same name.

On Saturday afternoon, March 5, Mannelli's gallery, Building Bridges Art Fdn in Bergamot Station, will host a very special afternoon walkthrough of the show helmed by yours truly, and with a live Skype session with the artist from his studio in Rome.

Also on March 5, there's an opening reception in the evening for a new show at West Adams space Muzeumm, for the VICA-curated exhibition Abstract Never Is..., investigating the possibilities and permutations of abstract photography. Peter Frank and I both contributed writings to the catalog, and Juri has assembled a talented and eclectic group of artists to participate in the experiment.

I am in love with this story for The Creators Project about a host of contemporary artists working with Cardboard.

Speaking of love, did you hear about Scott Hove's giant Cake Maze at DTLA's Think Tank Gallery? Here's what I wrote for The Creators Project about that.

I was pretty busy over at The Huffington Post, too, with essays on the dynamic, fascinating work of several contemporary artists, including:
-- Painter Scott A. Trimble.

-- Mixed media and installation artist Kim Schoenstadt at Chimento Contemporary.
-- Artist and fashion designer Victor Wilde of the Bohemian Society.
-- Photographer Mark Indig.
-- Painter Nurit Avesar, whose current exhibition Elemental Energies is on view at the Neutra Institute in Silver Lake. Avesar and I will have a gallery talk in the exhibition on Sunday, March 6, at 2pm.

The current issue of Fabrik Magazine (their 30th!) has two pieces by yours truly.

A profile on design impresario Sean Yashar (scroll to p38), and review of Aura Rosenberg's recent photography exhibition at Meliksetian Briggs, (p92).

Gifted young Czech painter Tomáš Spevák updated his website with a recent essay I had the honor to compose for him.

And finally, with appreciation, we remember Ojai gallerist Jolene Lloyd and her contributions to the art world, in a obituary for KCET's Artbound.
...and that's everything, for now. Happy Leap Year, and may the many blessings of the Fire Monkey be upon you.

The very smart and quirky (if I do say...) two-person show I helped curate at Chungking Studio featuring the paintings of Scott A. Trimble and he photography of Osceola Refetoff continues through this weekend, with one very special last chance to see it, as the galleries on the block host the LA Art Show's Littletopia after-party honoring Robert Williams this Thursday night, January 28th:

SHOW COVERAGE from DiversionsLA

I'll be appearing in a panel discussion at the LA Art Show on Saturday, January 30th at noon – The Life and Work of Riccardo Manelli, one of Europe’s Top Artists and Illustrators. Speakers: Riccardo Mannelli, artist; Gianluca Draghetti, filmmaker / curator; Peter Frank, art critic, and Shana Nys Dambrot, art critic. Moderator: Marisa Caichiolo, Curator and director, Building Bridges Art Exchange.

Later the same evening, Mannelli's exhibition opens at Bergamot Station, featuring a catalog with essays by Mr. Frank and myself.

I'm on a writers panel at the stARTup Art Fair also on Saturday, January 30th, at 4:00 pm: Organized by Peter Mays, Executive Director, Los Angeles Art Association — Art Critic Roundtable is a convening of esteemed Southern California art writers Megan Frances Abrahams (Fabrik, art ltd., Art Pulse, White Hot), Shana Nys Dambrot (WhiteHot, Flaunt, Huffington Post, art ltd.), and Anne Martens (ARTILLERY, J. Paul Getty Trust) to explore the current state of contemporary art and the role of the art critic and art writing, and offer insights into upcoming trends and the issues confronting artists.

At Gabba Gallery on February 6th, I'm honored to have three pieces of my own photography included in a new show "Curate This (Part Deux)" which examines the personal art work of curators and other art-world professionals who don't always lead with being artists. I'm thrilled and a little terrified!

I moderated a panel at photoLA which featured Jay Mark Johnson, Osceola Refetoff, Zoe Crosher, and Austin Young. "Artists Take Issue: the Aesthetics of Activism" delved into how photographers balance difficult truths with fine art beauty.

I had a Q&A with painter Bonita Helmer inside her current exhibition at George Billis Gallery in Culver City. She is showing work which appears in the catalog we did together last year, "Life, the Universe, and Everything" which is also available at the gallery.

The Scripps Ceramics Annual exhibition opened this weekend, and although I was not able to attend the opening reception, I'm already hearing reports that it's a stunner, and I had the honor of writing the exhibition catalog essay.

Justin Bower and I had a marvelous conversation at MOAH Lancaster in conjunction with his show there, celebrating the release of a fancy new art catalog, for which I also had the pleasure of writing an essay -- about art history, portraiture, and the post-human Singularity. Got all that?

An essay for the Huffington Post on assemblage sculptor Dwora Fried on the occasion of her current exhibition at Gallery 825:

I reviewed the new short film from street art sensation JR, starring Robert De Niro and set in the artist's massive Ellis Island public art installation, for Whitehot Magazine.

I have three pieces in the January/February issue of Art Ltd:
--My TOP TEN favorite gallery shows of 2015.
A review of STUART SEMPLE: My Sonic Youth at Fabien Castanier Gallery

--My CRITICS PICKS of 6 exciting new shows opening this month and next for the new season.

My story on painter F. Scott Hess was named one of KCET' 5 Best Visual Art Stories of 2015.

MONTAGE Magazine posted links to my recent stories on CALDER AT THE TATE and the 175th anniversary of the Invention of the Camera.

And my personal and professional love affair with the city of Cleveland continued brilliantly, with the announcement of this year's Creative Workforce Fellows -- a committee on which it was a genuine pleasure and truly rewarding, inspirational experience to have served. Mazel tov to all the grant winners.

Our Fashionistas Fight Back! show at OCCCA was reviewed in the LA Times. That was rad.

A story on high desert painter Eric Nash for Palm Spring Life:

A profile of the new Palm Springs Museum of Art's Director Liz Armstrong for Palm Springs Life:

Reviews of two exhibitions (Britt Ehringer at Galerie 102 and Jeff Mann at Porch Gallery) for a Special Report from Avant-Garde Ojai for Whitehot:

A profile of Mississippi-based woodblock artist and Droid aficionado Sean Starwars for The Creators Project:

And last but not least, the 2015 Whitehot Print Edition took Miami Basel by storm, and featured my spread (see below) on the always on point painter and political posterer Robbie Conal.

Here are the contents of my October --> November Mailchimp, everything I can remember writing and doing!

My very first of what I hope will be many pieces for the LA Review of Books (
LARB); in which I make a populist defense of the Broad:
ROAD TRIP: Yes, I do know the way to San Jose! I had the pleasure of speaking at the Institute of Contemporary Art about the Love/Hate relationship between art and criticism. (Mostly love!)
THE CREATORS PROJECT | VICE: Bettina Hubby's "Thanks for the Mammaries Facebook Edition" installation at LAND.
THE CREATORS PROJECT | VICE: UK street artist RUN's monumental installation "Man is God" at Howard-Griffin Gallery.
THE CREATORS PROJECT | VICE: Street artists dabsmyla's gallery/showroom takeover of an historic Vernon building on the Modernica campus.
THE CREATORS PROJECT | VICE: Photographer Christopher Colville makes photographs with no light but the gunpowder explosions he sets off in the desert.
HUFFINGTON POST: An essay for painter Andrew Pasquella's innovative new rubber and resin abstractions.
HUFFINGTON POST: An essay for sculptor Pancho Luna's mesmerizing resin bookshelf works, "Required Reading," open at Timothy Yarger through January.
HUFFINGTON POST: An essay for photographer Lori Pond's inky, eerie, taxidermy animal portraits, "Menace," open through November 20 at Gallery 825.
ARTSY published the press release I wrote for painter Suzan Woodruff and musician/video artist Nathan Currier's collaborative installation "Looming Atmospheres" at Launch LA.
CHIMENTO CONTEMPORARY opens a widely anticipated exhibition of new work by Chris Finley on November 14 and I wrote the press release essay.
OCCCA has the fierce and fabulous exhibition I juried, "Fashionistas Fight Back!" open through November 14 in Santa Ana.
